Nicolena aka Coko is a Detroit- and Idlewild-based artist, curator, entrepreneur, and community builder whose work explores the intersection of creativity, culture, history, and place. Though her path to becoming a professional artist was anything but conventional, her distinctive artistic voice quickly earned recognition following her debut solo exhibition in Detroit in 2021. Since then, galleries and museums throughout Michigan and beyond have featured her work, establishing her as both a compelling visual artist and a passionate cultural advocate.

In 2022, Nicolena served as Resident Artist for KWCity Detroit, transforming the shared space into a dynamic gallery and community hub where she curated exhibitions, hosted events, and created opportunities for fellow Michigan artists and nonprofit organizations to connect with new audiences. Her curatorial practice reflects a deep commitment to elevating underrepresented voices and fostering meaningful creative engagement.

At the heart of Nicolena's work is Historic Idlewild, Michigan—the storied African American resort community where five generations of her family have invested their talents, energy, and vision. Inspired by Idlewild's rich legacy and ongoing renaissance, she has dedicated herself to helping preserve its history and shape its future. In 2024, she founded the IdleWild About Art outdoor art and history tour, an initiative designed to celebrate local heritage, cultivate community pride, preserve legacy, and attract new visitors through public art and storytelling.

Nicolena is also the founder of Black Eden Brews Coffee Bar & Cafe, located within Idlewild’s Historic Morton's Motel, where she created a welcoming gathering place that serves as an important gathering spot and art gallery, supporting artists, entrepreneurs, and community connection.

Through her artwork and community-centered initiatives, Nicolena invites others to experience the transformative power of art, history, community, and nature intertwined—and to discover the enduring spirit of both her beloved hometowns, Detroit and Idlewild.
